A portrait of Christopher Paul a leading South Wales Wedding Photographer

Welcome to my guide. If you’re planning a wedding and your’re looking at South Wales, below is a curated list picked by me. I’ve added some quick info as an overview and then a slightly more in depth section under neath. I’ve spent some time putting my personal thoughts together so it’s more of a guide then a directory. I’ll have links to real weddings from the venues live soon. If you would like a chat about hiring me for wedding photography and videography feel free to drop me a message and I’ll get right back to you. Hope you find it useful.

Canada Lodge and Lake

A beutiful Autumn scene of the Lodge at Canada Lodge and Lake

Canada Lodge and Lake Key Features

  • Perfect for small to medium sized weddings

  • Close to Cardiff City

  • Close to Cardiff Airport

  • Large capacity onsite accommodation available

One of my favourite South Wales wedding venues. Tucked away but very near Cardiff it’s great for transport links. Cardiff Airport is only around the corner as well if you have any international guests flying to Wales. It offers rustic cosy cabins and the main building is the perfect size for mid size weddings and smaller guest lists as well. It looks beautiful all year round but particularly in the Autumn.

  • Tucked away near Monmouthshire good links from M4, M50, Cardiff Newport Midlands and Bristol

  • Stunning grounds and great sunset

  • Onsite accommodation available

  • Family run independent business Vicky and Jake are amazing, legit the best

One of my absolute favourite South Wales wedding venues hands down. Before I list off all the things I personally love about this venue and the people behind it we can tick off the logistics. Caer Llan is prob the best on this list for transport. Although your looking at getting married in South Wales some people aren’t lucky enough to be here, and driving or getting transport from outside of South Wales is super easy because you have the M4, M5 and M50 taking everyone from the rest of the UK to Caer Llan super easily.

The house itself has loads of character and Vicky and Jake are like family to you, constantly helping you make the day go exactly how you want. Every time I’ve been there it’s looked completely different. You can put your photos and decor up and it looks really nice and homely. You have loads of space to mingle about both inside and out so that’s a huge tick for both wet and dry weather. I love the grounds for portraits it’s one of my favourites. The evening always works out well as well and the patio terrace areas are great with the guests in the summer evenings. The views from balcony are epic with the rolling Monmouthshire hills and stunning sunsets.

I’ve been lucky enough to photograph a lot of weddings at The Orangery, which is one of my favourite South Wales wedding venues. Steeped in history it’s long beautifully lit main room is an absolute treat to photograph. The grounds are awesome with the old ruins of the abbey and also the castle, yep a castle on site too. Perfect for medium and larger weddings and you can put your own touches on it too.

I have some many awesome memories at Insole Court. I really do think that this could be one of the best intimate wedding venues close to Cardiff. I met Heledd who is in charge, and she is truly awesome. They cannot do enough for any couple that chooses to get married there. It has plenty of grounds which are beautiful and a lot of different rooms which make it a great experience being able to mingle around in those parts of the day between the big events. • Near Cardiff Airport and good access from Swansea, Bridgend, Brecon, and Cardiff

  • Set in the beautiful Vale of Glamorgan countryside

  • Secluded estate with plenty of onsite accommodation

  • Amazing gardens for portraits

Secluded, luxurious and perfectly placed right in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan. Gileston Manor estate is great for access. I find that venues more central and east ward make a big difference for people travelling in from the rest of the UK. The grounds are stunning and it’s a very private affair with the main entrance approaching the venue down a country lane. I had the privilege of meeting the owners who were lovely. The views at the end of the day when the sun goes down are epic. The grounds give you an ability to have a festival vibe easily with lawn games and all that fun.

Further west and very well established after hitting it out the park from the get go, St Tewdrics house is a great South Wales Wedding Venue. Tucked away behind the stunning grounds and tall trees the buildings offer an amazing expereince. The first thing you’ll notice inside the building are the iconic stairs, you’ll have seen a lot of wedding photos with couples on the stairs. It’s beautifully lit with a sky light (another tick for wedding photographers yay) and also has tall windows in the reception rooms downstairs. • One of my favourite caterers in house

Holm House is an amazing place to both get married and to be a wedding photographer. It has a modern contemporary feel to the building with a really nice flowing garden that people enjoy canapés on. It works brilliant all year round with the main reception room being big enough and light enough to ensure everyone is having a great time. The caterers are amazing and really tick in my memory every time I’ve had food there. The staff in general are great. You’ve got some parking out front and accommodation on site with really nice rooms. If you’re feeling fancy and wanted to treat yourself to a spa they have one on site. There’s plenty of accommodation and shops within walking distance to Penarth Town as well. You have Penarth Pier and really pretty gardens on route to it both of which make great places to get some nice portraits at some point on the day.

Nash Point Light House Key Features

  • On the beach

  • Has a Light House which is unique

  • Potential for Marquee, and festival wedding set up with fields near by (not guaranteed from my knowledge but has definitely happened)

  • Beautiful South Wales Sunsets over looking the sea

I absolutely love weddings at Nash Point Light House. You have the beautiful South Wales Coast right on your doorstep.

The Light house building itself is really an amazing building, it’s been beautiful decorated and it’s light airy and also homely the perfect balance for feeling right at home when getting ready for the big day. There is plenty of room for the bridal party to get ready and it is really relaxing, which is the perfect atmosphere for when you’re about to get married.

One wedding that I shot here was in the Summer and had an awesome marquee set up in the field with the wedding breakfast seated inside and then canapés and lawn games out side. It’s a perfect tiny walk away from the cliffs and the beach for portraits and it really is a special place, also personally to me growing up around here.

You never forget the beautiful sunsets here a true gem in the Vale of Glamorgan for your South Wales wedding venue.

  • Access to the pier for awesome portraits

  • Lots of accommodation available a short walk away

  • Good transport links with train station nearby

Penarth Pier is an iconic victorian building that sits proudly on the seafront in South Wales’ cute town of Penarth. It’s unique and quirky, with and ideally placed close to accommodation, train links to Cardiff, Swansea and Newport. I love the views that you get from the top room as well as the access you can get to the pier itself. It works all year round and is run by the Vale of Glamorgan council. I particularly like Penarth Pier Pavilion in the autumn and winter. The board walks make an ideal spot for portraits and the rooms upstairs with a view are also a great option if the weather isn’t great. If the weather is awesome you have the gardens that overlook Penarth Beach just around the corner. A brilliant venue that you can make your own and has shed loads of character.

Rosedew Farm is an awesome wedding venue here in South Wales. A true wedding photographers dream with so many awesome spots on site and close for portraits. The building is a popular mix of traditional meets contemporary with tall windows in the new extension that pours light throughout the room. The owners are real salt of the earth people and couldn’t do enough for the couples I’ve spoken to and seen for myself. Although I put the above South Wales Wedding Venues into a top ten, I wanted to put in more of my favourite venues below. Think of this guide as a personal piece where I’m sharing my thoughts on these wedding venues as a professional photographer that has worked at them and had experience seeing weddings. The wedding venues below are awesome as well and I’ve had an amazing time at all of them. I’d love to hear from you even if you’re in the early stages of booking, if you think I could be your guy then drop me a message and let me know. I hope you are finding the guide helpful.

With a Church within walking distance and also the Plymouth arms an amazing old traditional pub as well it has so many options for your wedding day. You can get married on site and there are also options to hire a marquee as well. They allow outside caterers and a corkage fee if you want to arrange your own drinks. The Secret Garden at Dyffryn Mawr Key Features

  • Super unique venue

  • Festival vibe setup with Marquee

  • Church Nearby

  • Onsite accomodation availble

  • Perfect for smaller weddings

Perhaps one of the most magical wedding venues I’ve ever photographed. I say magical in a sense that it you could drive past it and not know it’s there and then when you are it’s really impressive how well they use the space. I’d say it’s for smaller to mid size weddings but I can remember one wedding that had an impressive amount of guests there. It worked brilliantly as well. Another wedding venue that scores super high with the owners and staff being next level amazing. The marquee set up is really cool and a lovely bride of mine Claire dressed her marquee amazingly with lots of other cool touches from bespoke suppliers, there’s more info on them all in a serrate blog post just under this section. They have some accomodation available and it’s not far from Cardiff, Bridgend, Swansea or even Bristol really. Nestled in rural Vale of Glamorgan it really is worth having a look especially if you plan on getting quite involved with dressing the venue and decor. Love it.

  • Close to M4 and Cardiff Airport couples travelling in

It’s got accommodation on site for your wedding party and potential extra guests, great for when you have a few families travelling far to stay. The grounds are beautifully kept and give lots of opportunities for portraits right on site. The owners and staff really care about what they are doing and make sure you have the best time. A recent upgrade to Pencoed House which I really love is the new ‘Cwrt Clive’ Glass house. It’s a wedding photographers dream to shoot wedding photos in . In the day it pours all that beautiful light through getting great shots of guests and wedding party at the canapés and afternoon. It also works amazing in Winter or when it rains. When people need some cover it allows nice photographs to be taken with happy warm guests able to mingle with plenty of space. I love it.

  • Fit for a king ! (literally, I couldn’t not write that sorry)

Cardiff Castle is unique in that it’s massive and official, used for state events, it’s also got a charming side to it. It’s more likely aimed for mid to larger weddings, and there are lots of options for room hire and setups. I forget that here in South Wales we have castle’s everywhere and it would make a great venue for couples who want exactly that. You could travel from all over Wales, the UK or overseas for this venue and it would cater you perfectly. You are slap bang in the middle of the city centre believe it or not. You have tons of accommodation and transport links with Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen St train station 15 mins walking distance. You also have Cardiff international airport 30 mins drive away. The grounds themselves are amazing and the back onto Coopers fields which sprawls for miles and is a huge green heart for everyone that lives nearby. Fairy Hill is a great wedding venue in South West Wales. Located in the Gower Area of Outstanding Beauty, it’s nestled amongst stunning scenery. The main reception room is a really well thought out design with nice lighting and lots of glass. The terraced areas and lawn are great for guests to hang out and I particularly love this venue in the Autumn.
